Relationships are key in a relational database. Heurist deals with relationships in a slightly different way, to make it easier and more intuitive for users to link records within their database in different ways. Relationships within your data are key to analysis and revealing patterns. Some users have found that by defining relationships within their dataset in Heurist, patterns in the data that they never imagined have been revealed, leading to new interpretations and a greater understanding of their data. Many researchers find that their analysis relies heavily on the relationships between records in their database.

It is therefore important to understand how to get the most out of using Heurist’s relationships fields to best effect.

What is covered?

In this course we provide:

  • an overview of the different kinds of relationships in a Heurist database
  • how to use Heurist relationship fields
  • when to use which kind of relationship field
  • one-to-one, one-to-many and many-to-many joins in the Heurist context
  • parent-child relationships in Heurist fields
  • how relationships are depicted in records
  • how to investigate relationships in more detail
  • importing relationships

It is a prerequisite that anyone registering for the Relationships course has already attended a “Getting Started With Heurist” course. If you think that your level of experience and acquired knowledge of Heurist already exceeds this requirement, but still wish to register for the “Dealing with Relationships” course, please add Claire Reeler as a user in your Heurist database and email us with its URL, so that we can check that the database already has a compatible structure and test data.
